Miguel Cotto Uses Ecko T-Shirts to Help Promote Fight....And More!

As May 5th is quickly approaching we are looking at probably the kick off to the best sporting year in ages. Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will faceoff to continue along the path to solidify each person’s legacy as a world class hall of fame worthy fighter and as the best of all time. However it is important to understand another aspect of this fight, and that’s the business element.

Year after year all fight fans hear about “Money Mayweather” and how he, on his own, holds the record for most PPV buys, on top of a few belts in a couple of weight divisions. Or you may have heard that in the Mayweather absence, Manny Pacquiao quickly moved up the ranks to the number one pound for pound boxer in the world, and became one of the 15 highest paid athletes on the planet. If you have heard all of this then you may be curious as to where Miguel Cotto can even come into the conversation.

First of all let’s look at the fact that, Miguel’s last fight saw him rake in 600,000 PPV views. If you’ve been following along, that’s number three on the most views list behind you guessed it, Money and Pacquiao. Then we have the endorsements. Cotto has had a long standing agreement with Ecko Unltd, and for the most part to many consumers is considered the face of the brand. Now with probably the biggest fight of his career looming, He is putting himself in position to make a lot of cash, not just on the fight, but in the endorsements and fan memorabilia long after the fight is over.

As part of his positioning and in celebration of the upcoming event, a limited edition Miguel Cotto Ecko t shirts collection consisting of eight distinct items has been launched by Ecko Unltd urban clothing. And to help promote the fight globally and to aid in cementing himself as the fan favourite for the fight, Cotto has been to visit troops in Germany.

"Cotto is one of the best in the boxing world, so it became natural for us to start a relationship with him. Along with Miguel his team and family are the best in the industry and together we have achieved unprecedented success." said Eric Samson, Director of Sports Marketing and E-commerce at Ecko. "We're excited about the May 5th fight in Las Vegas because it's a big deal for Cotto and the Ecko team. Our multi channel marketing campaign activating this event has helped drive notable attention to an already highly anticipated event."

Cotto is also working with Ecko MMA in an effort to help cross promote for the brand. The Ecko marketing and e-commerce team in conjunction with the Cotto camp has arranged banner ads, photo shoots, social media campaigns, video production and other initiatives with a focus on digital. Both Miguel and the urban clothing brand have a highly engaged digital customer base which will definitely work towards promoting this fight as well.

So while “Money Mayweather” may make all of his earnings on the fight itself, Cotto has adopted a true hustler’s spirit and put himself in a position to profit, once again, long after he is done with boxing. What are your thoughts on Miguel Cotto as a businessman?
